Vietnam: Remnants of War Kill Three Children, Injure 5
Each week our staff in Vietnam prepares a report on office activities. Included in the reports are updates on accidents involving explosive remnants of war... they can be heartbreaking.
1. (Tran Van Quyen, born in 1995 and Tran Van Thuan, born in 1997) An accident happened at 7h am on August 28th 2006 in Phu Vang district of Thua Thien Hue province and injured two kids. Thuan picked up what he thought was a small piece of iron while he was playing in a hilly area. He brought it home for fun. On the way home, he met two other kids whom he gave the iron piece to. It suddenly detonated when one of the kids tried to disemble and injued three of them. Thuan was severely injured in his two eyes and legs while the other two slightly injured in hands. Thuan and Quyen were then taken to Hue Central Hospital for first aid and treatment.
2. (Nguyen Cong Thanh-born in 1996, Pham Cong Lam-born in 1992, Pham Tien Nam-born in 1970, Vo Van Hanh-born in 1982 and Tran Van Minh-born in 1983) A horrible accident happened at 17h pm on September 2nd 2006 in Hoan Cat village, Cam Nghia commune, Cam Lo district of Quang Tri province. Three of them went to collect scrap metal and came home at the end of the day. While sorting out the junk metals at scrap dealer’s, unknown ordnance exploded and killed Thanh and Nam at once. Hanh was severely injured and died upon reaching Quang Tri General Hospital. Lam and Minh received a lot of fragments and were now in QTGH for intensive treatment. The youngest victim, Nguyen Cong Thanh, aged 10, was there by random to buy milk for his younger brother but was killed on the spot.
